Born and raised in Chandigarh, Kanika Subbiah pursued Chemical engineering and an MBA from the University of Chicago. She worked with MicroStrategy, a consulting firm, followed by clothing retailer Gymboree in California, launching its online store. She has been living in Chennai since 2008 when she moved back to India with her husband Vellayan Subbiah of the Murugappa Group, and two kids. Since moving back, she has actively pursued her passion of being an entrepreneur.
In 2013, she launched India’s first exclusive online gift store – CherryTin. ‘Cherry’ is symbolic of warmth, whimsy, colour and fun while ‘Tin’ represents dependability, strength, solid and cool. Kanika’s personal style reflects minimalism; she brings a similar design sensibility and thought to CherryTin.
The idea germinated three years ago; to simply one’s gifting experience through a platform that addresses accessibility and need for meaningful gifts while ensuring an end-to-end top class experience. This idea transformed into reality in CherryTin - a personalised online gift store for signature, unique and beautifully packaged gifts for Him, Her, Baby and Home. Key categories feature Jewellery, Silver, Home/Newborn baby, Gourmet (Nuts & Dried Fruit, Tea) and Personalised Stationery.
CherryTin has a dual focus towards simplifying the gift buying process to a point where the shopper’s experience is enjoyable and hassle free. This is achieved through an intuitive & spontaneous website, product selection, reviews, recommendations and customer service. And second, to delight the receiver of the gift - through product quality, relevance and packaging. For corporate clients, CherryTin acts like a gift concierge, taking care of product quality, packaging, customer service and the complicated logistics of gift delivery all over India.
Summarizing the entire experience and journey thus far, Kanika adds “My CherryTin journey started with a simple idea, that meaningful gifts should be easier to come by, and that shopping for them should be as much fun as receiving them. It has been an exciting three years complete with surprise, excitement, frustration, disappointment, and most of all the satisfaction that comes from building something!”
A fitness enthusiast, Kanika enjoys the outdoors and can sometimes be spotted on East Cast Road cycling or running on weekends. She practices yoga, swims, and enjoys baking with her sons. A quite evening with the family over board games is her idea of relaxing and taking time off.
